Personal History Edvan Rydo was born on Jakku in 45 BBY. Whatever memories he may have had of his biological family were lost long before he was old enough to understand where he came from. Like many Jedi of his generation, Edvan was discovered by a Jedi Recruiter while still an infant and brought to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.

The transition from Jakku to Coruscant was one Edvan never remembered. As far as he was concerned, the Jedi Temple had always been home.

Indeed, even when still a youngling, Edvan was never an easy learner for his mentors.

Edvan was not disruptive just for the sake of disrupting. On the contrary, it was his nature to ask so many questions that his teachers did not always like.

"Why does one have to do a trick in such and such a manner while it works equally well in another way?" "Why does a Jedi have to be dressed in that particular manner?" "Why should some traditions be upheld for the mere sake of having been upheld for centuries?"

For Edvan, posing a question was far from disrespectful.

Not so for some of his instructors.

Several mentors seriously doubted that Edvan would pass the Initiate Trials. He was a charismatic and sociable boy by nature, but he displayed an attitude of an independent spirit which did not suit the Jedi well. He liked to learn things by experience, not just by heart, and cared much less about obedience than about the reasons for a particular rule.

And yet, Edvan managed to prove them all wrong by passing the initiate trials.

The Pipyyr Correctional Facility - 32 BBY

The Jedi had received information suggesting that something was wrong inside the facility. Children being held there were reportedly disappearing from official records, and several employees had abruptly resigned or transferred. There was no evidence, however, and the Republic authorities denied that anything unusual was happening.

On'tala was assigned to investigate. Rather than entering openly as Jedi, she devised an undercover operation. She would take on a Padawan, train him to go undercover and send him into the facility. Edvan would be placed inside the facility under a false identity as one of its young inmates. For Edvan, it was his first genuine infiltration mission.

It was his first time being deliberately separated from the comfort of openly being a Jedi. His lightsaber was left behind with On'tala, and he was given only the possessions appropriate to his fabricated identity. His task was simple on paper: observe, listen and identify anything suspicious.

In practice, it was considerably harder. Edvan had to endure the harsh environment of the facility without revealing that he was a Jedi. He quickly learned that the other children were far more perceptive than the adults expected. Some had developed their own methods of surviving the institution, and others had simply stopped trusting anyone who claimed they were there to help.

Edvan initially struggled to remain detached. He had been instructed to gather information. Instead, he found himself making friends. He learned which guards could be trusted, which areas of the facility were avoided by staff, and which children seemed frightened whenever certain administrators appeared. One particular child eventually revealed that several inmates had been removed during the night and never returned.

Edvan suspected something was seriously wrong. The investigation eventually led him towards a restricted section of the medical bay. Edvan discovered there was an attempt to prevent a pandemic and, instead of healing the children, they killed them to prevent drainage of medical resources, and that their executions were being concealed from Republic records.

Edvan had succeeded in gathering the information they needed. Sent his gathered intel to On'tala, who was undercover as his lawyer, and Edvan was extracted. Edvan understood a lesson. A Jedi could not save everyone by charging into every dangerous situation. Sometimes the greatest act of protection was waiting, gathering evidence and allowing the right time to act.

He didn't necessarily agree with all of it. But he never forgot the children he had met on Pipyyr. The mission became one of the earliest foundations of his belief that protecting people mattered more than following procedure for its own sake.

On'tala was impressive with the way Edvan performed, seeing that she could turn him into another On'tala, she requested to take him on as her Padawan learner.

On'tala was a disciplined and highly methodical Jedi. Her work often required patience, deception and absolute control over her emotions. She could spend weeks building a false identity, gathering information and waiting for precisely the right moment to act.

Edvan was almost the opposite. He was sociable, impulsive and naturally inclined to speak his mind. He preferred acting rather than waiting, and his tendency to improvise occasionally frustrating his new Master. On'tala believed discipline was the foundation of everything a Jedi did. Edvan believed discipline was useful, but that a Jedi should know when to think beyond it.

Their first months together were filled with arguments. On'tala would correct Edvan's posture, speech, clothing, and approach to missions. Edvan would listen, occasionally follow her instructions, and then inevitably ask why things had to be done that way.

Yet On'tala soon realized that Edvan possessed something valuable for an infiltrator; people trusted him. He was naturally charismatic and could speak to almost anyone without making them feel as though they were being interrogated. While On'tala could disappear into the shadows, Edvan could walk into a room and be a part of the conversation.

Rather than trying to make Edvan into a copy of herself, On'tala began teaching him how to use his own personality as a tool. She taught him how to read a room before speaking, how to maintain a false identity, how to recognize when someone was lying and, most importantly, when not to use the Force.

Edvan learned that infiltration wasn't always about hiding. Sometimes the best disguise was simply being yourself.

As Edvan grew older, On'tala increasingly incorporated him into her covert assignments.

Their missions took them across the Republic, often placing them in situations where openly identifying themselves as Jedi would have made their objectives impossible.

On Ord Mantell, the pair infiltrated a criminal organization suspected of supplying weapons to separatist sympathizers. On'tala spent weeks building their cover identities while Edvan posed as a courier working for the organization. His natural ability to talk with people allowed him to gain information from members who would never have spoken to a Jedi.

On Coruscant, they investigated a Republic official suspected of accepting payments from a crime syndicate. Edvan spent several weeks posing as an assistant within the official's office while On'tala operated elsewhere in the building. The mission taught him how much information could be obtained simply by listening to people who assumed nobody important was paying attention.

On Naboo, they assisted local authorities in investigating a series of disappearances connected to an underground criminal network. The mission was less violent than many of their assignments, but it became one of Edvan's favorites. He spent considerable time outside the city, enjoying the planet's natural beauty and discovering his growing appreciation for peaceful environments.

Another mission took them to Corulag, where On'tala infiltrated a political organization suspected of planning an assassination. Edvan was assigned to act as an assassin. The operation nearly failed when Edvan broke character to intervene when a civilian was threatened.

On'tala later told him that he had once again allowed his emotions to interfere with the mission. Edvan replied that the civilian was alive. Neither of them considered the argument settled.

While On'tala specialized in infiltration, she understood that her Padawan needed a fighting style that complemented his personality. Edvan developed a particular affinity for Form IV, Ataru. The aggressive and acrobatic form suited him surprisingly well.

Edvan had always preferred movement to standing still. Rather than meeting an opponent's strength directly, he learned to use speed, positioning and momentum to control a fight. His natural athleticism made him capable of impressive movements, although his lack of experience occasionally led him to take unnecessary risks.

On'tala repeatedly reminded him that being capable of something did not mean he should always do it. Edvan did not always listen. Over time, however, the lessons began to stick.

His lightsaber eventually became something more personal than simply a weapon. His blue kyber crystal reflected the way Edvan viewed the Jedi: not as an institution he needed to obey blindly, but as an organization whose purpose was to protect life. His unusual light-whip configuration only reinforced his unconventional approach to combat.

Edvan and On'tala spent much of their time away from the Temple. Their missions took them across the Republic, where they investigated criminal organizations, dealt with crime lords, assisted local authorities, and participated in diplomatic negotiations.

These missions became some of the most formative experiences of Edvan's life. He discovered that he enjoyed speaking with ordinary people far more than sitting in a Jedi Council chamber. He could be surprisingly charismatic when dealing with civilians and politicians, and his ability to speak openly sometimes allowed him to connect with people who distrusted the Jedi.

He also learned that diplomacy rarely went according to plan. Some negotiations ended peacefully. Others ended with Edvan drawing his lightsaber. On'tala often criticized him for being too casual during dangerous situations, while Edvan argued that remaining calm was better than frightening everyone around him.

Despite their differences, they became a highly effective team. On'tala was the patience and discipline. Edvan was the improvisation.

When the Clone Wars began in 22 BBY, Edvan and On'tala were not present for the First Battle of Geonosis. They were too far away to participate in the initial battle, but the outbreak of the war changed their lives almost immediately.

The Jedi Order suddenly needed commanders.

Knights and Masters who had spent their careers as peacekeepers were being placed in command of armies. Diplomats were becoming generals. Investigators were being sent into battlefields.

Edvan was uncomfortable with the transformation. He had become a Jedi because he wanted to protect people. Now the Republic was asking him to lead soldiers into war.

On'tala understood his hesitation, but she also recognized that Edvan had qualities that many battlefield commanders lacked. He could talk to people. He could improvise. He was willing to listen to those under his command, and he had little interest in treating clone troopers as disposable tools.

After ten years as her Padawan, the Jedi Councsol bestowed the rank of Knight upon Edvan despite On'tala’s objection. She was proud of him. She was also disappointed. After all those years, Edvan had never become the traditional Jedi she had initially hoped to create. He was still stubborn. Still questioning. Still independent. But On'tala had finally realized that this was not a failure. Edvan didn't need to become another On'tala. He needed to become Edvan.

When Edvan was granted the rank of Jedi Knight, On'tala told him that the greatest lesson she had learned from teaching him was that the Jedi Order needed people who were willing to question it. Edvan, naturally, responded by asking whether that was supposed to be a compliment.

With the Clone Wars escalating, newly knighted Edvan was given command of the 5008th Legion. The appointment came with a responsibility he had never expected. Thousands of clone troopers would now look to him for orders.

Edvan quickly developed a reputation among his troops for being approachable. Unlike some Jedi Generals, he made an effort to learn the personalities of his officers and soldiers rather than only viewing them by rank.

He preferred walking among the troops rather than remaining inside a command center. He listened to clone officers when planning operations. And when possible, he tried to find solutions that protected lives rather than simply achieving the fastest military victory.

His soldiers sometimes found his attitude strange for a Jedi General. Edvan didn't. To him, they were people first and soldiers second.

Away from the battlefield, Edvan remained much the same person he had always been. He enjoyed walking, particularly through natural environments far from the noise and crowds of Coruscant. He enjoyed dancing when he had the opportunity, even if his fellow Jedi occasionally found his choice of entertainment unusual.

Nature gave him something the Jedi Temple rarely could: silence without expectation. Edvan often found himself wondering what his life might have looked like if he had remained on Jakku.

Would he have become a moisture farmer? A scavenger? Would he have had a family? He knew he would never have the answers. Rather than dwelling on them, Edvan focused on the life he had. He was a Jedi. He was a General. He was a Padawan's master. And, despite everything, he still hoped that one day he could put down his lightsaber and take a desk somewhere within the Jedi Order.

The idea of spending his days handling reports instead of battle plans genuinely appealed to him. For now, however, there were people who needed protecting. And Edvan Rydo had never been very good at walking away from people who needed help.
